Toyota Hits Four Million Unit Global Sales Milestone for Hybrids

TORRANCE (May. 22, 2012) – Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) in Japan announced its global hybrid vehicle sales totaled four million units through April 2012.

Toyota currently sells 18 hybrid passenger vehicles in 80 countries and regions around the world. This year, hybrid vehicle accounted for 15 percent of TMC’s global vehicle sales. Prius, Toyota’s first hybrid passenger car, went on sale in Japan in 1997. Hybrid technology was later introduced to the U.S. in 2000 with the arrival of the Prius.

Since then, the Toyota Division of Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A. sold 1.5 million hybrid vehicles in the U.S., accounting for 65 percent of all hybrid vehicles sold in the region. Prius, the iconic hybrid brand, comprises half of all hybrids on the road in the U.S. with sales totaling 1.2 million units through April 2012.

The expansion of the Prius has been successful in the U.S. since the Prius v was introduced in to the market in November 2011 followed by Prius c and Prius Plug-in during the first quarter 2012. In that time, Prius family sold 60,859 units in the U.S.

"All of us at Toyota would like to sincerely thank our customers, who have made Prius the best-selling hybrid in the industry," said Bob Carter, group vice president and general manager, Toyota Division. "While we're proud of this accomplishment, we are not stopping here as hybrids will continue to be a core technology for Toyota."

In addition to the Prius Family, Toyota’s other U.S. hybrid models include versions of the Camry and Highlander, which feature larger displacement applications of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive.

Toyota calculates that the total number of its hybrid vehicles sold globally since 1997 have produced to approximately 26 million fewer tons of C02 emissions than would have been emitted by gasoline-powered vehicles of similar size and driving performance.

Maintenance Tip: Driving in a Dust Storm

A dust storm usually arrives suddenly in the form of an advancing wall of dust and debris which may be miles long and several thousand feet high. Dust storms can create dangerous, sometimes even deadly driving conditions and sometimes reduce visibility to zero. They strike with little warning, making driving conditions hazardous. Blinding, choking dust can quickly reduce visibility, causing accidents that may involve chain collisions, creating massive pileups.

  1. Do not enter a dust storm area if you can avoid it.
  2. Never stop in the travel lane!
  3. Travel at a speed suitable for limited visibility
  4. If you can pull over to the side of the road, just do it!
  5. Buckle your seat belt.
  6. If you can’t pull off the road, turn your LIGHTS ON.
  7. If you cannot pull over, proceed with caution based on visibility.
  8. Sound your horn occasionally.
  9. Use the painted center line to help guide you.
  10. If you are on the freeway, leave the freeway at an exit ramp, if possible.
  11. Look for a safe place to pull over.

After you are completely off the traveled portion of the roadway:

  • TURN OFF your vehicle lights. In the past, motorists were advised to park and keep the vehicle lights on. But this proved confusing to other drivers who were following the lights of the cars ahead of them. Often the front car was hit from behind, or the car following went off in a ditch.
  • Keep your car radio on
  • Set your emergency brake.
  • Take your foot off the brake pedal.
  • Wait until visibility is at least 300 feet before re-entering the roadway.
  • Heavy rain may follow the dust storm.

Voting for Toyota’s 100 Cars for Good Opens This Morning at 10 am ET/7 am PT

TORRANCE, Calif. (May 14, 2012) – At 10:00 am ET/7:00 am PT today (Monday), Toyota will open voting for the second year of 100 Cars for Good, a national philanthropic program that will award 100 cars to 100 nonprofits over the course of 100 consecutive days. Winners will be selected each day through public voting on Facebook at www.100carsforgood.com.

Five nonprofit organizations will be profiled each day. Registered Facebook users will be able to vote once daily for the nonprofit they think can do the most good with a new vehicle.  The organization with the most votes at the end of the day will win a new vehicle. The four runners-up will each receive a $1,000 cash grant from Toyota.

100 Cars for Good voting will be open every day from 10:00 am ET/7:00 am PT to 12:00 am ET/9:00 pm PT. Voting will continue through Tuesday, August 21.

“At Toyota, we appreciate what a big difference a new car or truck can make for organizations working to improve lives and strengthen communities across America,” said Jim Lentz, President and Chief Executive Officer of Toyota Motor Sales. “Over the past 20 years, Toyota has contributed more than half a billion dollars to nonprofits throughout the U.S. 100 Cars for Good allows us to build on that commitment in new ways, putting the public in the ‘driver’s seat’ as we work to help community organizations make an even bigger impact. We wish all of this year’s finalists the best of luck.”

The 500 finalists for 100 Cars for Good represent all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Profiles of all of this year’s finalists can be found at www.100carsforgood.com.

Winning nonprofits will be able to choose from one of six Toyota models: Camry Hybrid, Highlander SUV, Prius v hybrid, Sienna minivan, Sienna Mobility or Tundra full-sized pickup. A six-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty will also be provided for each vehicle, compliments of Toyota Financial Services.

To help participating nonprofits with their 100 Cars for Good campaigns – and to help them develop lasting digital marketing and social media skills that are critical to today’s nonprofits – Toyota has provided each finalist with a toolkit that includes a digital video camera, training materials  and free online advertising credits. The company is providing social media training support online to the finalists as well.

Toyota Sales Resurgence Gets Help from Popular Hybrid Products

TORRANCE, Calif. (May 9, 2012) - The Toyota Division’s strong April sales performance (160,493 units for 13.1 percent increase compared to April 2011) was helped in large part by the release of its latest hybrid products that created high levels of consumer demand.

Rising fuel prices at the pump, a generation of better performing hybrid vehicles and an increased consumer acceptance of hybrid technology are all conditions that have propelled the sales of Toyota hybrid vehicles.

The Prius Family vehicles (Prius, Prius v, Prius Plug-in and Prius c) accounted for a total combined sales volume of 25,168 units.  Based on current sales, the demand for the fuel-saving Prius Family models seems to be outpacing the company's initial U.S. target of more than 220,000 units this year.

Notable among the Prius models is the sales pace of the subcompact Prius c.  This new model which offers an EPA-rated 53 city mpg and a starting MSRP of $18,950 continued its rapid sales pace with 4,006 units sold in April.  During its first 49 days on the market, Prius c posted sale of 8,901 units.

“We’re tracking well ahead of that,” said Bob Carter, Toyota Division group vice president and general manager, in an interview with Bloomberg this week in Los Angeles.  “I’ve ordered additional production.  I’m confident we’ll get additional production, but globally we’re seeing high demand, particularly in Japan.”

The redesigned 2012 Camry Hybrid, which was introduced in fall of 2011, also recorded stroing sales during the March and April 2012.  Camry Hybrid sold 9,810 units (5,404 in March and 4,406 units in April) and accounted for 12.4 percent of the total Camry volume during the same two-month period (79,387 total Camry units sold).
