Toyota to Increase 4-Cylinder Engine Capacity in Kentucky

ERLANGER, Ky. (May 8, 2012) -- Toyota announced today it will increase annual engine assembly capacity of 4-cylinder engines by more than 100,000 at its plant in Georgetown, Ky. The increase will begin August 2013. The approximately $30 million project will create about 80 new jobs.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky (TMMK) currently assembles engines for the Avalon, Camry and Venza, all built at TMMK.  The capacity increase will supply engines for TMMK’s Camry and Camry Hybrid and RAV4 in Woodstock, Ontario.

“Twenty six years ago, I took part in Toyota’s groundbreaking in Georgetown, which was filled with excitement for Kentucky’s future,” Governor Beshear said.  “Today, we still have that same excitement for Toyota’s past, present and future in the Commonwealth.  This latest expansion brings Toyota’s total investment to nearly $6 billion, meaning billions of dollars in incomes for thousands of Kentuckians, changing lives, strengthening our economy, and improving the Commonwealth.”

The increase will raise TMMK total employment to approximately 6,700 and total plant investment to more than $5.96 billion.

“This is great news for our team members and our company,” said Wil James, president of TMMK.  “This project is the result of the strong partnerships we have locally and across the state, which will help grow our business and strengthen the communities where we do business.”

Today’s announcement is the latest in a string of production increase announcements since February including Toyota plants in Indiana, West Virginia and Canada. The cumulative investment is approximately $565 million and nearly 1,000 jobs are being added.

“This engine production increase, and the several announcements before it, reflect our growing optimism for an improving North American market,” said Steve St. Angelo, executive vice president of Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc.

This investment will increase engine production at the Kentucky plant to more than 500,000 annually and will increase total engine production in the United States to more than 1.2 million per year. Toyota also has engine plants in Alabama and West Virginia.

Comments from elected officials:

Senator Mitch McConnell:
“I appreciate Toyota’s continued commitment to supporting Kentucky’s economy,” said Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.  This new engine expansion project at the Georgetown plant will provide much-needed jobs, which will help get more Kentuckians back to work.”

“I am thrilled that Toyota is increasing its assembly capacity at the Georgetown plant,” said Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky.  Toyota’s investment means more jobs and a boost for Central Kentucky at a time when our economic recovery needs momentum.  Clearly, Toyota is committed to its presence in the Commonwealth.”

Congressman Ben Chandler:
“By investing in this plant, Toyota is making a positive statement about the economic strength of our region,” said Rep. Ben Chandler, D-Ky. This expansion will create new jobs and put more Kentuckians back to work. I’ve always been proud that Toyota chooses to call Central Kentucky home to its largest plant in North America, and today is no exception.”

Congressman Geoff Davis:
"Toyota's Georgetown plant has been a major economic engine for our region, and today's announcement reaffirms the company's commitment to doing business in Kentucky,” said Rep. Geoff Davis, R-Ky. “The new engine line will bring more jobs and economic activity to the Commonwealth at a time when they are needed most. I appreciate Toyota's continued commitment to Kentucky workers and the Commonwealth of Kentucky."

Toyota and Tesla to reveal electric RAV4 next week

It's been nearly two years since Toyota announced its collaboration with Tesla Motors to bring an electric version of the RAV4 to market in 2012. We first saw what the vehicle might be like through a demonstration prototype unveiled at the 2010 L.A. Auto Show.

Toyota now is preparing unveil its fully engineered RAV4 EV at the 26th World Electric Vehicle Symposium and Exposition next Monday.

The one tease we have of the new electric Rav4 is the badge on the door near the rocker panel (above). Later this year, Toyota will begin production of the jointly developed EV at its Woodstock plant in Ontario, where the current RAV4 is built.

Toyota paid Tesla about $100 million to supply the RAV4 EV's powertrain, including the battery, motor, gearbox and power electronics. Toyota says the RAV4 EV's range could reach about 100 miles, which is what most carmakers quote for their EVs before EPA testing that typically dials that back a bit.

There's no word yet if the RAV4 EV is based off a new RAV4 design or the current vehicle, which has been on the market for nearly six years now.

Toyota Named One of DiversityInc's Top 50 Companies for Diversity for the Sixth Consecutive Year

April 25, 2012 - New York, NY – Toyota has been named one of DiversityInc's Top 50 Companies for Diversity®, finishing 41st overall in the publication's 12th annual survey.

Toyota’s 2012 inclusion marks the sixth consecutive year the company has been recognized by DiversityInc and an improvement from the 2011 survey, where it ranked 46th overall.

The competition for this year’s awards was stronger than ever, with a total of 587 companies across a wide range of industries—including consulting, retail, manufacturing and banking— vying for a position on the 2012 list. The awards were entirely driven by metrics obtained in a detailed survey. DiversityInc’s Top 50 companies demonstrate consistent strength in four areas: CEO Commitment, Human Capital, Corporate and Organizational Communications, and Supplier Diversity.

“At Toyota, we believe that leveraging the diversity of talent, experiences and perspectives is essential to effectively meeting the needs of our customers,” said Shigeki Terashi, president & chief operating officer for Toyota Motor North America, Inc. “Our commitment to maximizing diversity in every aspect of our business is rooted in Toyota’s guiding principles, and we’re grateful to once again be recognized by DiversityInc for our progress in this area.”

In addition to the being included in the list of Top 50 Companies for Diversity overall, Toyota also ranked seventh in DiversityInc’s Top 10 Companies for LGBT Employees.

These are just two of Toyota’s latest recognitions for its efforts around diversity and inclusion. Other recent honors include inclusion in the Human Rights Campaign "Best Places to Work Corporate Equality Index" for the past four years; induction into the Billion Dollar Roundtable, in recognition of over $1 billion in annual spending with certified ethnic and women-owned suppliers; and receiving the “Corporation of the Year” award from the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC).

“Toyota’s commitment to diversity is very deep,” said Luke Visconti, CEO of DiversityInc. “The innovative ways the company ties diversity to the business—from philanthropy, supplier diversity, employee resource groups and maximizing the contributions of workers with disabilities throughout operations—highlights Toyota’s emphasis on constant improvement.”
